After the success of the Koi grown in the 38,000 Gallon pond this year we have decided to run two 'Grow Outs' next year. In Japan the Koi only spend around 12-14 weeks in the warm water for growing. The rainy season ends in mid June so the Koi are only at the higher temperatures from the end of June until the end of September, after which the temperatures cool down for the Harvest in October/November.
It is because of this that we feel, with our favourable location down here in the South East that we can run two 'Grow Outs' next year and offer two different price brackets to enable more customers to take part.
The first one will be from around mid March to the end of June and the second from the beginning of July until mid October. Each one fitting perfectly in the 12-14 week time slot.
Any Koi that goes into the 38,000 gallon pond is one we are confident in and because of this, makes it a fairly 'safe' purchase for the hobbyist. We are not going to place poor grade Koi in our pond and then grow them on our premises are we?
The inaugural 'Grow Out' proved our claim of 1cm a week growth and the figures to back this up are on the 'Grow Out 2009' page on the website. To be fair we would have achieved a much higher growth had the pond been conditioned more prior to the Koi going in. With one 'Grow Out' under our belts we are already much wiser in the art of growing Koi, after all we are a Koi dealership not a breeder!
Although with Koi there are no guarantees, we are hopeful of the Koi being around 35-40cm by next June. I have attached a photo of three Yohei Yamabuki Ogons, two were placed in the 38,000 pond as 17cm 'Guinea pigs' the other stayed in the shop, this is the difference just 10 weeks in our 38,000 gallon pond can make!

Everyone who entered this years event saw their Koi not only grow, but improve and enjoyed coming to see the 'Harvest' of the pond. Maybe we are now beginning to offer the UK hobbyist that little extra 'Buzz' that their Japanese counterparts get when growing their Koi in the mud ponds of Japan. You can't beat the moment when your Koi is lifted from the murky water, its what makes you return to Japan year after year, to do it again and again.... True Koi Kichi!
The Breeder we have used this time in Takeda of Hiroshima one of the elite few to have won the All Japan Koi Show. These Koi are of a very beautiful style and have fantastic shine and skin quality. To get the chance to buy these Koi was not easy as most breeders will not sell their Koi when this young, too much of a chance of missing a good one!
So we are very confident that within this 'Grow Out' there are some very special Koi indeed, the price of these Koi is only £229.00 including growing!
